A DRIVER hit a tree in the early hours of this morning (May 31) before fleeing the scene, leaving his car ablaze and the tree fallen across the main road.

Fire crews were called to Old Broyle Road, Chichester, just after 1.30am to find the car ‘well alight’.

No one was trapped in the vehicle and a police tracker dog was used to try to locate the driver, however it was unsuccessful.

The road was closed because of the fallen tree.

A spokesman from Sussex Police confirmed the Skoda saloon had left the road, gone into a ditch, collided with a tree and caught fire.

He said: “The man driving the car was reported to have left the scene and there was no evidence of any other person or vehicle being involved.

“The area was searched, and local hospitals have been checked, but the driver has not yet been traced and enquiries will continue.”

The scene was made safe by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
