WILLIAM Thomas Allen, 67, of Nyetimber Lane, West Chiltington, Horsham, appeared at Lewes Crown Court today (January 26) and pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, following the death of his wife in June 2011.
Judge Richard Brown imposed a hospital order on Allen along with a restriction order which means that the MoJ will determine his release date rather than the hospital.
Detective Chief Inspector Trevor Bowles, who lead the investigation, said: “This was a tragic set of events. Sadly we will never know the real reason why Mr Allen killed his wife in a moment of extreme violence.
“I believe justice has been served today as the hospital order imposed on Allen will ensure he is treated in a mental health unit without any limit of time.”
Allen was arrested on suspicion of murder on 9 June 2011 after calling the emergency services from his home at around 2.40pm. When officers arrived they found him in the hallway of the six bedroom rented property with knife injuries to his legs.
The body of Mrs Linda Allen, 64, was found with head injuries lying in a bed upstairs. There was blood throughout the house.
Allen was initially taken to Worthing Hospital with for treatment and then taken into custody. He was charged on Sunday 12 June the murder of Linda Allen and remanded back into custody.
The post mortem conducted on Linda Allen, showed that she had died of head injuries and stab wounds to the chest.
