Crawley Town goalkeeper Brian Jensen eyes play-off place

Goalkeeper Brian Jensen may see himself as a bit of fossil, but he believes the backbone is in place at Crawley Town ahead of their League One opener on Saturday. After wholesale changes at Reds during the summer, the 39-year-old stopper believes a good connection is developing between the new-look side.

Crawley kick-off the new season away to Barnsley on Saturday, and although he knows it’s currently work in progress, Jensen is hoping they can sneak into the play-offs come May.

He said: “I think we have done really well considering we have a lot of new players and it will take time.

“You can see now there is a little bit of a connection between myself and the back four, and the back four to the midfield four and all the way up to the strikers.

“You can see we are starting to have a little bit of a connection there, but it will take time.

“It’s not a finished product yet, but we are working on it and the quicker we get there, the better we will have a good season.

“The standard here is good. All the guys here want to play football, but they will also grind and work. There are always a good few tackles flying about and it’s a good bunch of lads, definitely.

“We have to try to show them (younger players) the right way and how to do it and all that kind of stuff, it’s just part of it being a little bit of a fossil.”

In Saturday’s curtain raiser, the seasoned stopper sees no reason that they can’t make a winning start at the relegated Championship side.

He said: “It will be a tough test. They will obviously be favourites, just getting relegated from the Championship and they will have a good side, but like I said before anything can happen in football.

“If we go out there, and we are solid and do what we can do, we might get a positive result up there.

“We want to be in the top half and sneak into the play-offs. It’s a transition going on here at the moment with all the new players and it will take time, but the quicker we gel in together, the quicker we will get a good season.

On their pre-season campaign overall, the towering goalkeeper added: “It’s just pre-season number 24 for me. I’ve had quite a few and I am happy it’s done and dusted so we can crack on with the game on Saturday.”
