“A TRULY unforgettable experience” saw children from Upper Beeding and Steyning singing at the O2.

A group of 51 children from Upper Beeding Primary School were joined by youngesters from Steyning and Henfield primary schools for the trip to London to sing in the Young Voices concert last Wednesday.

For more than a decade, Young Voices has been staging the largest children’s concerts in the world.

Conducted by David Lawrence, whose work involves directing symphony choruses, European radio choirs and professional orchestras, the concerts allow children to be part of a massive choir – 8,000 children in total.

Corinne Welby, music co-ordinator at Upper Beeding, said it was “a truly unforgettable experience for children and adults alike”.

“The concert got off to a tremendous start,” she added. “Screams of excitement from all children echoed around the arena when the lights suddenly went out, only to be replaced by spotlights darting around the choir and audience and thousands of mini torches shining out.

“The image was breath-taking, something I hope will stay with the children for a very long time and ultimately inspire their singing for years to come.”

The children sang a range of songs and were joined by the African Children’s Choir, who led a performance of Sing during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee concert in June. Other guest artistes included Connie Talbot and Randolph Matthews.

“The children’s enthusiasm, commitment to learning some incredibly complex songs and energy is inspiring. To be part of such a huge project was amazing,” added Corinne.

She went on to thank the parents for their support.
