WEEKEND DEBATE: New market town or add-ons to villages?

Indicative plans for West End Lane development, where Barratt Homes are planning for 160 homes west of Henfield.

Indicative plans for West End Lane development, where Barratt Homes are planning for 160 homes west of Henfield.

In the third of our weekend debates we are asking whether people would prefer a new market town as proposed by Mayfield Market Towns developers are proposing to piece meal developments on the outskirts of towns and villages.

Horsham District Council is yet to put a two-year housing plan in place, but villages are feeling increasingly under threat by unwanted development.

Henfield is the latest to suffer as Barratt Homes plans to submit plans for 160 further homes on top of the 102 rejected by the district council- a decision overturn by the Government planning inspector in 2012.

But houses need to be built and where they are built, they are being snapped up quickly. The Berkeley Homes development to the west of Horsham is proving very popular.

Mayfield Market Towns floated a proposal to HDC’s strategic planning advisory team in June to build 10,000 homes between Henfield and Sayers Common either comprised of one settlement or five separate villages.

Is this the answer to the Horsham district’s housing dilemma or should councillors make the decision to expand existing villages and towns across the district?
