Volunteers helped make sure that Young Carers got a break from routine when a special “Fun Day” session was held at the Park Centre in Burgess Hill.

Youngsters living in the Burgess Hill area attended.

The children and young people usually help look after a member of the family who is sick, disabled or has mental health problems, or is misusing drugs or alcohol.

The Fun Afternoon at the Park Centre in Burgess Hill provided an opportunity for the young carers to have fun and try out a range of activities, including pizza making, crafts, sports, and circus skills

The young carers also enjoyed a karate taster session, which was run by tutors from local karate school, Reiwaryu Ryushinkan Karate-do. Led by Sensei Tim Houghton, who is a 5th degree black belt, the tutors gave their time for free and thoroughly enjoyed working with the young people.

The event was organised by the Mid Sussex Young Carers Partnership, comprising Burgess Hill Boys Club, West Sussex County Council Young Carers Team and Youth Service, Crossroads Care South Central and Burgess Hill Town Council.

Young volunteers from Outset Youth Action also helped run the activities on the day. The event was funded by Sussex Community Foundation.

Town Mayor Chris Thomas-Atkin said: “The role of young carers tends to be overlooked but the success of the Fun Afternoon shows there is a real need.”

Paul Myles, from Burgess Hill Boys Club, said: “It was great to see another good initiative come to fruition creating a most enjoyable fun day for young carers whilst embracing a multi-agency team spirit.”
