VIDEO: Kids taught to read music before words

Children as young as three can read music before words thanks to one Horsham musician’s ground breaking creation.

Stringbabies, created by Kay Tucker, 50, has been shortlisted for Best Musical Initiative at this year’s Music Teacher Awards - a prestigious event presented by Classic FM’s Margherita Taylor.

“I’m afraid I may have swore when I found out,” she told the County Times, “it was quite a shock.”

The musician, of Nelson Road, devised her own notation for young cello, viola and violin players.

Her idea soon gathered pace, and was rolled out to musical establishments and schools across Surrey.

“I was very interested in teaching strings to pre school children, but what I felt was lacking was teaching children to read music at that age,” she continued.

“So I created my own initiative to break the concept of music down to the bones.”

She added: “Stringbabies has been given a tremendous thumbs up and a real sign of recognition within in the music industry.”
