TRAVELLERS who settled in a layby in Emsworth have been told to move on.
Following a court hearing at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court at 2pm today (February 20), the encampment of travellers parked in a layby on the A259, in Havant Road, must leave within 24 hours.
Since February 15, police and council officers, working on behalf of Hampshire County Council’s highways department, visited the site and started the process of repossession through legal proceedings.
The order, for removal of persons and vehicles unlawfully on land, was awarded under the Criminal Justice Public Order Act section 78.
A council spokeswoman said the clean-up operation will commence immediately after the travellers have vacated the site.
She added: “Havant Borough Council has a duty to keep the highway clear. However, the costs of serving the legal papers, court proceedings, council solicitor and lead officers time will be re-charged to Hampshire County Council.”
