TRAVEL: Continued disruption on railways into rush hour

Train delays.

Train delays.

Southern trains are reporting that services are still subject to delays and cancellations as we head into the rush hour this afternoon (Tuesday March 12).

Heavy snow fell across the Southern Network last night and this morning. Although most of the snow has melted, the ice and snow is still causing problems with the signalling systems, where the ‘points’ at junctions are having to be cleared of snow.

Ice build-up causes big problems for moving parts like points, which move trains from one track to another. Snow can get compacted into solid blocks of ice by passing trains causing points to become stuck.

It is causing particular delays on the Brigton to London Victoria, but Southern are reporting that all its services are subject to delay this evening.

Short notice cancellations and delays of up to 40 minutes can be expected across the whole Southern network today. A normal service is expected to resume tomorrow (Wednesday March 13).

People heading towards Brighton via Three Bridges are limited to hourly services from London Victoria to Brighton. These services will call additionally at Gatwick Airport and Haywards Heath.

Tickets are being accepted on: Southeastern, South West Trains and First Capital Connect services on any reasonable routes, First Great Western services between Redhill and Guildford, Brighton & Hove buses on the coastal routes, Stagecoach bus route 700 and London Underground service between London Terminals.
