Shoreham students introduced to opera

Shoreham Academy hosted a performance by the English Pocket Opera Company on Thursday, as part of a tour which has just been launched with United Learning group of schools.

Students were treated to a performance of Opera Blocks, an engaging, interactive show designed to break down the building blocks of opera.

They were introduced to the three basic ingredients of opera – action, words and music – and were taught the more technical side of the music, for example the use of libretto, arias and choruses.

Alison Manton, director of music, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for our year-seven students. They learned about the main features of opera in a practical way.

“They loved the opportunity to dress up and act out Carmen. English Pocket Opera Company were fantastic with our students – very professional, and talented.”
