Serious accident on M23 around Crawley causes major delays

editorial image

Emergency services were called to the M23 just south of the Crawley intersection (junction 10) at 4.30pm today (Saturday February 23) after a report that a Ford Transit travelling north had been in collision with the central reservation causing damage over some 200 yards which has affected both carriageways.

The M23 has been closed in both directions in the immediate vicinity of the collision but vehicles are still able to pass the scene using the on and off slips at junction 10.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the M23 around Crawley until further notice, and Sussex Police and Highways Agency say they are grateful for their patience during this inevitable period of traffic disruption.

The motorway will open again as soon as possible but this may take some time.

The driver was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with injuries which were initially assessed as serious.

The police investigation is in its early stages and there is currently no information about any other casualties.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact Sussex Police via 101 quoting serial 0976 of 23/2 or quoting Operation Capstone.
