Drivers who have not yet collected their abandoned cars from the A23 may have to pay recovery charges.

Police moved around 40 cars following heavy snow on Monday night (March 11).

Traffic at the A23 was gridlocked on Handcross Hill with many sleeping in their cars or abandoning their vehicles.

Not all the vehicles had been collected on Wednesday morning (March 13).

The Highways Agency said anyone who had not claimed their vehicle by 11am on Wednesday would face charges.

Drivers should contact the police if they need to find out the location of their vehicle.

Jon Griffiths, of the Highways Agency, said: “We would like to thank road users caught up in the severe weather in Sussex and Kent for their patience during the past 24 hours. It has been a very challenging time for everyone and I am pleased that the network incidents have been cleared.

“We were prepared and our dedicated winter fleet continuously treated the network before and during the severe weather. However strong winds, gusting at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour created snow drifts of up to a metre in height, in many cases blowing snow back onto the carriageway as soon as it had been cleared.

“The Highways Agency worked throughout the night with our partners in the emergency services and local authorities to respond to hundreds of incidents. With cold temperatures continuing into this evening and tomorrow, the Agency will continue to monitor traffic and weather conditions and treat the network as needed.”
