TV physicist Professor Brian Cox took over a Storrington school’s science class last week, giving hundreds of lucky students what truly was “a lesson of a lifetime”.

Science club students at Rydon Community College, in Rock Road, entered a national competition run by Big Bang to win a lesson with the popular scientist.

Picked at random, the school was treated to an hour-long chat from Professor Cox exploring the wonders of the cosmos.

Topics included the possibility of extra-terrestrial life, the Large Hadron Collider and that in a seemingly empty piece of sky, there are actually thousands of galaxies.

At the start of his talk, Professor Cox asked the children, aged between 10 and 13, how many of them wanted to be scientists.

Speaking to the Herald afterwards, it was clear that he was impressed with the response.

Professor Cox said: “It was brilliant. So many hands went up when I asked them if they wanted to be scientists. It’s great to see.

“You don’t have to be a genius to go into science as there are lots of different jobs out there.”
