During February half term Steyning Grammar School ran a performance workshop, New Horizons, for Year 6, 7 and 8 students from schools in Steyning and surrounding areas.

Twenty Six students from Steyning, Beeding, Jolesfield and Henfield schools took part in the workshop, representing five schools and three year groups.  The week was led by Steyning Grammar school Governor Jan Hobson, with the support of skilled tutors, all former pupils. These included Alex Packer, now a professional Actor, Sophie Whittle, an experienced choreographer and Luci Whitehead, a trained vocalist.

The course included elements of dance, drama, physical theatre, improvisation, actor musicianship and singing. New Horizons took students on a journey of exploration, developing performance skills whilst building confidence and relationships.

The week was busy and creative. The students worked with Airports as a theme, exploring the life, sounds and characters of airports.  They worked well together, made new friends, developed new skills and had a great deal of fun.  The highly skilled tutors brought out the best in the pupils and helped them develop new skills and grow in confidence. The students worked on a variety of performance techniques and presented their work to an appreciative audience of parents and friends at the end of the week.

One parent summed up the general feedback on how successful the performance had been: “ Thank you so much! The performance was fab! Can’t believe they all achieved that in a week!”

“It was a very successful project all round,” concluded Jan Hobson ” and one that we hope to repeat in the future as all participants have alreadyexpressed an interest in future workshops.”
