VIDEO: Shoreham Academy ‘bounces back’ with GCSE successes

SHOREHAM Academy has bounced back following disappointing GCSE results last year, with grades for English being particularly outstanding.

Students are celebrating after receiving their GCSE results today, with 54 per cent achieving five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

Significant successes included Luke Mepham with 12 A*, Amy Sutton with 12 A*/A, Kiara Shaw with 12 A*/A, Hadera Burki with 11 A*/A, Josie Richards with 11 A*/A, Megan Lamper with 11 A*/ A, Tom Benford with nine A*/A, Max Aitchinson with nine A*/A, Ben Reed with nine A*/A, Charlotte Pierce with nine A*/ A, Salene Basso with eight. A*/ A.

Principal Heidi Brown was delighted with the achievements as she leaves the school to take up a headship at Bexhill High Academy.

“I am very pleased with these results,” she said. “In particular, our English results are outstanding having increased by 26 per cent with 82 per cent of our students gaining a C grade or above and 20 per cent gaining A or A*.

“We deemed this our bounce back year following disappointing results in 2013 and we have certainly done that. I would like to congratulate all the staff and students who have worked phenomenally hard over the last year.

“When I started at this school, before it became an academy, I knew that we had the potential to vastly improve our results and become a school worthy of its children and staff.

“Our results have more than doubled since then and we have received an outstanding from Ofsted. So, while very sorry to be leaving Shoreham, I am very pleased to have achieved what I set out to do here. I am very proud of our students and staff and congratulate them all on this success.”

There were 236 students taking GCSE exams this year, compared to 219 last year, when, 48 per cent gained five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

Jim Coupe, vice principal at Shoreham responsible for GCSE outcomes and principal designate for September, added: “I am so proud of our students for the time and effort that they have put into their studies.

“The commitment that they have shown bodes well for their own future and sets a fantastic example to those that follow as we look ahead to the new school year.”
