LIDO staff have responded to criticism of plans for a £1.25 million retractable roof at the venue.

Social media sites have been awash with calls to reinstate a swimming pool in The Lido, in Marine Parade, Worthing, rather than the proposed roof development.

Philippa Bradbury, PR and marketing manager at The Lido, said: “The pool closed down in the first place because it was making a big loss. As a business model it doesn’t work.

“If we don’t get the money for the roof, which we won’t without public support, it will go to another town, it won’t go to somewhere else in Worthing.”

Joe Skilton, The Lido’s arcade supervisor, added: “The rides do draw in a lot of people during the winter. If there was a pool there would be no-one here at all.”
