AN invitation to drop in for a glass of champagne was answered by more than 130 friends of a couple celebrating their sapphire wedding anniversary.

Dodo and Harry Treadwell were married 65 years ago, after falling in love when they discovered by chance that they had the same birthday.

The ‘open house’ party, with music by Shoreham violinist Sarah Milner, was held in the sunlit garden of their home in Southwick, with well-wishers coming and going throughout the day.

The anniversary couple, who have three children and a granddaughter, were married at St Peter’s Church, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, in 1949.

They moved to Sussex shortly afterwards, where Mr Treadwell, a journalist, founded a successful publishing company.

An unexpected highlight of the celebrations was at St Michael’s Parish Church, Southwick, last Sunday.

At the end of morning service, choir mistress Angie Jackson struck up Mendelssohn’s Wedding March on the organ and the surprised couple then walked out arm in arm, to the applause of the congregation.
