COUNCILS are being urged to sign up for a new campaign to protect verges.
Following an article in the Steyning Herald, author Pamela Kelt is urging more people to get involved.
West Sussex County Council was criticised for mowing down rare orchids on a verge in Penlands Rise.
Ms Kelt said: “As a fan of orchids, I was saddened to read the story about the bee orchids being mown down by council workers.”
She encouraged residents to consider signing up to Alan Titchmarsh’s new Plantlife campaign.
“I’ve done my small bit and written to my council (Warwickshire), but councils are rather slow in signing up,” she added. “Only three councils (Poole, Dorset and Surrey) have agreed so far, which is a travesty in my view.”
