Part of Horsham town centre was evacuated as a gas leak was discovered in Piries Place earlier this week.

In other Horsham news McDonald’s closed the doors of its Horsham restaurant after 25 years at the weekend, staff have spoken about a break-in at the Non Stop Party Shop, a Southwater man took part in a project that has planted poppies at the Tower of London to commemorate the start of the First World War, and almost 200 people turned up to celebrate the completion of the first phase of works to Horsham’s Riverside Walk.

Sussex Police have defended the naming and shaming of drivers charged with drink-driving offences, Adele’s former Partridge Green is up for sale for £6m, a 20-year-old cancer sufferer from Billingshurst took part in a race in London to raise money for cancer research, and new plans to demolish a Horsham office block and build 21 retirement apartments were unveiled.

A lifelong Cowfold resident and war veteran celebrated his 90th birthday this week, actress Julie Walters is set to start a 12-hour lawn mower race in Billingshurst, and an American author has been honoured as South Downs litter picking hero by the council.

In South Downs news the cost of purchasing Mill Stream Medical Centre in Storrington has been revealed, Horsham District Council has launched a legal challenge against the planning inspector’s decision to overturn an application for 160 Henfield homes on appeal, a developer is planning 41 new homes at the site of a Storrington dog kennel, while a new playpark in Amberley was unveiled.

Last week the County Times also held its annual Business Matters Awards, with many winners from the Horsham area.
