Latest decisions on Chichester housing

DEVELOPERS threats and emotive speeches from those in need of housing were on the agenda at planning committees this week.

And it has been a turbulent week for residents of East Wittering and Bracklesham Bay, as one application for a housing development was turned down while another was permitted.

Wates Developments’ plan for 50 homes in Bracklesham Bay was refused last month at a Chichester District Council area development management committee (south).

Because the committee members went against the advice of officers it was referred to the planning application referral committee which took place on Monday (February 4).

After intense debate and anger at developers ‘threats’, committee members refused permission for the development.

The applicant plans to launch an appeal against the decision.

However, in an area development management committee (south) meeting today (February 6), councillors approved plans for a 17-home development in Piggery Hall Lane, in East Wittering.

A resident of East Wittering, Mrs Curd, spoke in support of the application, and said as a mother-of-two on benefits in the parish, there was a need for affordable homes in the village.

For full coverage of the planning application referral committee which turned down 50 houses, see tomorrow’s Observer (February 7).

A full report on today’s committee meeting will be in next week’s Observer (February 14).
