Join Shoreham cadets and reach for the sky
Reach for the sky with Shoreham Air Cadets
FLYING solo in a glider, taking part in the Airborne March in the Netherlands, spending a week overseas at RAF Gibraltar, military-themed initiative exercises in the middle of a forest, and playing bagpipes alongside the Army Pipes and Drums band up in Inverness.
Sound like fun? That’s just a selection of activities members of 1440 (Shoreham) Squadron of the Air Cadets took part in during 2012, as well as assisting at various events across West Sussex, including Shoreham Airshow.
On Tuesday, March 12, the Squadron will be holding an open evening at the TA Centre, Eastern Avenue, Shoreham, from 7pm, when parents and potential cadets are invited to see how the Squadron operates, and some examples of the various events cadets get involved in on a regular basis.
Young people are eligible to join the Air Cadets aged 13 onwards, and are able to stay in until their 20th birthday.
The number of cadets on the squadron grew by almost 30 per cent last year, and the commanding officer, Pilot Officer Alan Mearns, is keen to see the same happen again this year.
“The cadets have an ever-increasing amount of events that they are able to take part in, both on the squadron and externally,” he said.
“It’s great for the cadets to be part of an organisation 40,000-strong nationally and to be able to gain so many exciting experiences.”
The squadron holds parade nights twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm to 9.30pm, where cadets get the opportunity to learn about aviation-related topics, take part in drill and marching instruction, and other team-based exercises designed to develop the cadets’ leadership and teamwork qualities.
At the open evening, staff of the squadron will be on hand to answer any questions.
The next intake of new cadets will follow, during the Easter school holidays.
As a voluntary organisation, the squadron relies largely on adult volunteers, so it is also keen to expand the staff numbers both on the squadron directly and on the squadron’s civilian committee. Any volunteers are encouraged to visit on a parade night to discuss involvement.
