Matt Redman from Hurstpierpoint has been catapulted into music stardom after winning two Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Last year, Matt had the biggest song on Christian Radio in the USA, which stayed at number one on the national Christian radio chart for 16 weeks.

Matt, who has penned Christian songs for 15 years, was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won two for his hit song ‘10,000 Reasons’ in the categories of ‘Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance’ and ‘Best Contemporary Christian Music Song’.

Matt said: “It was a huge privilege to receive three Grammy nominations, but if I’m being honest I didn’t really think I’d win.

“I’m not sure if a Brit has ever won in this category before and there were some brilliant American artists and songwriters nominated in the same categories.

“When they called my name for the first award it was a big shock and a brilliant surprise. Then the second Grammy came a few minutes later and took it over the edge!”

In his acceptance speech, Matt thanked his wife Beth and five children for their love and support and quoted the composer Bach who said that the aim of music should be ‘the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul’.

“Music has an amazing potential to touch people’s lives,” said Matt. “It’s a huge encouragement when you see that happening, even on this level.”
