Hike for Hospices total reaches £190,000 in five years

ROTARY clubs across the area have handed over cheques to four Sussex hospices – bringing the total raised by their Hike for Hospices event to nearly £190,000 in five years.

Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club was one of 20 clubs helping to run Hike For Hospices last August.

It was responsible for the route from St Botolph’s Church in Steyning to Amberley Museum, which formed part of the two-day challenge for walkers and bike riders, taking them across the South Downs from Lewes to Chichester.

Each Rotary club provided marshals and staff to run the start and finish base for the various sections, as well as a multitude of other tasks.

Last Friday, five Shoreham and Southwick members joined many other Rotarians and staff from the four hospices for the annual cheque presentations at the Chatsworth Hotel, Worthing.

The Martlets in Hove, St Barnabas House in Worthing, St Peter and St James in Lewes and St Wilfrid’s in Chichester each received £4,000.

Hugh Lowson, chief executive of St Barnabas House, thanked all concerned on behalf of the hospices.

This year’s event will be on August 17 and 18, and it is hoped this will take the total raised to well over £200,000.
