Henfield based horror author James Herbert dies

Henfield based horror author James Herbert died at his home yesterday (Wednesday March 20), aged 69.

Mr Herbert was awarded an OBE for Services to Literature in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2010.

His books have sold more than 50 million copies and have been published in 27 languages.

They include The Rats and The Fog – disaster novels with giant man-eating black rats in the first and an accidentally-released chemical weapon in the second.

The prolific writer produced a new novel every year between 1974 and 1988.

The Fog, The Dark and The Survivor are hailed as classics of the horror genre.

He was awarded the title World Grand Master of Horror at the 2010 World Horror Convention, which was held in Brighton – the first time the prestigious event has ever been held outside America.

Mr Herbert’s daughters went to the Towers Convent School, Upper Beeding, and he wrote The Black Tower loosely based on the theme.
