Hotel and spa guests and staff were evacuated when a fire started at Alexander House Hotel and Utopia Spa in Turners Hill.

The alarm was raised at the luxury 5-star hotel just before 9am on Saturday when a fire started in a second floor corridor and laundary area.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the property was “heavily smoke logged” and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were dispatched into the building to estabish the extent of the blaze.

According to the report, two people were treated at the scene for the effect of smoke inhalation and two further persons with smoke inhalation were taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire was accidental, the rescue service said, and fire engines attended from Turners Hill itself and East Grinstead stations. Two PPV fans were used to quickly get rid of the smoke.

On its website Alexander House describes itself as “one of UK’s the finest country retreats” that “tips the scales towards opulence” and is a “world class hotel experience”.

A spokesperson for the hotel said all the guests and staff were evacuated from the hotel and the spa areas efficiently and quickly and the buildings returned to normal the same day.

She added: “The emergency evacuation was carried out quickly and smoothly. We have had some really nice comments from guests about how helpful our team was.”

The spokesperson said there was surprisingly little damaged cause to the property by the incident and the smoke was cleared quickly.

The fire brigade attended the three-storey hotel building for two hours until they were sure there was no further danger.
