Residents in the Horsham District will be receiving a leaflet in the next few weeks with more information on how to join the new garden waste collection service.

The new opt-in service will replace the current free service and anyone wishing to continue to have their garden waste bin emptied will need to sign up and pay £29 per year.

This is the cheapest service offered by any council in West Sussex, working out at less than 60p per week.

Customers with larger gardens can also pay to have additional bins emptied, with the cost of emptying each additional bin at their property fixed at £15 per year.

The new service was agreed by Horsham District Council in December 2012, with the Council receiving less money from the Government and having to take difficult decisions in finding ways to balance income against the cost of delivering services.

The leaflet will provide residents with information on the garden waste collection scheme, as part of an ongoing campaign to promote the scheme, and tell readers how they can sign up.

The leader of the council, Ray Dawe, said: “Whilst we acknowledge that the move to a charged service will not be welcomed by all, we believe that it is fairer that only those residents that choose to participate in the scheme should pay for the service.”

There is also information on the garden waste collection scheme on Horsham District Council’s website as well as on the Council’s Facebook page (search Horsham District Council) and Twitter page (@HorshamDC).
