Final surgery ends gender swap journey

A transexual woman has completed her journey to womanhood after undergoing gender reconstructive surgery.

Kirsty Cass, from Southgate, lived as a woman trapped in a man’s body for 50 years until she received gender reconstructive surgery on Monday (March 4).

Kirsty told no one about her inner identity for 46 years and was depressed for much of her life, even attempting to commit suicide in her late teens.

Her growing desperation lead her to do something terrifying four years ago.

She said: “One day I had been heavily drinking and I looked down between my legs and went to my tool box, got a Stanley knife and tried to cut it off.

“Blood was everywhere and I panicked and realised what I had done.”

After being treated in hospital, Kirsty put in touch with a gender specialist at Charing Cross Hospital, in London, who helped her deal with her gender dysphoria.

The condition makes a person feel that there is a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity.

Kirsty explained that without that self-harming moment, she would not have begun her journey to becoming a female.

She said: “If I hadn’t tried to do that I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Growing up, Kirsty knew she was different to other people and noted a similarity between herself and other men and women at the hospital.

She said: “When I go to Charing Cross you notice most of the people are in their 40s and 50s because as you get older the feelings grow stronger and you can’t hide it any more.”

Over the past four years Kirsty has received hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to give her more female hormones which help to redistribute body fat, reduce facial hair growth and generally make her look more feminine.

She has also come out to her friends and family and is working at a gay and transgender friendly bar called Bar 7, in Crawley.
