Extra open days at Fort to help replace stolen tools

IN bid to replace stolen tools, Shoreham Fort is planning to double its number of open days this year.
The fort already has fortnightly volunteer days, but will now be open on the Sundays in between, too.
Gary Baines, chairman of The Friends of Shoreham Fort, said: “We are going to keep our fortnightly volunteer days, but open the fort on the Sundays in between, too, for tours and teas in the hope that we can raise more awareness for the unique site and the monies to replace the very missed, stolen tools.
“To do this, we need more volunteers to help serve teas and coffees in Food for Fort and to conduct the tours.
“Anyone that is interested should pop along on a Sunday, whether it be for an hour or a day, it will help us get that little bit closer to achieving our goals.”
Sunday was one of the volunteering days, where people are on site working from 11am and free tours are conducted at 1pm and 3pm.
On Sunday, March 10, it will be one of the new tea and tours days, and the pattern will continue alternately throughout the season.
The Friends dedicate much of their time to maintaining and conserving the fort and its grounds.
The volunters were devastated when a brand new strimmer, lawnmower and industrial Honda brush cutter were taken from the fort during the last week of January.
The Makita strimmer and petrol lawnmower had been donated by Nick Neale, of Gardner and Scardifield, only a few months before.
