TRIBUTES have been paid to an “inspirational” and “dedicated” Scout leader, who died this month after over 60 years of service.

Harold Burgess, of Franklin Road, Durrington, died at Worthing Hospital, aged 94, on January 14, but was still active with the organisation until recently.

A former district Scout leader and assistant district commissioner for the Worthing area, Harold began his time with the Scouts after WW2, in 1946, after his mother wrote him a letter asking him whether he would be interested in joining the Scouts when he returned from battle.

Beginning in London, he relocated to the area in 1975 and held a number of positions, including group quartermaster and secretary at 2nd Goring Scouts.

Harold’s son, Simon, 42, said that the Scouting movement had lost a dedicated volunteer.

He said: “Scouting has lost a dedicated Scout. My dad, was a great family man, very community minded and he always did his best for anyone who needed help.

For the full story, see the Worthing Herald, out Thursday, January 31.
