Centre gets an underwater makeover

GUILD Care's Ashdown Centre in Worthing is getting a full refurbishment, starting this weekend.

The centre, which provides respite from caring, for families of children and young people with special needs and disabilities, has decided to go with an underwater theme.

Blue organza is set to adorn the ceilings to create the beautiful indoor ocean.

But, what would the ocean be without all the weird and wonderful creatures that live in it? Well, that’s where volunteers will come in.

Lesley-Anne Lloyd, the charity’s director of fundraising, communications and marketing, said: “We need donations of sea life themed cuddly toys. A shark, dolphins, an octopus – if it’s got fins or tentacles we want it, the bigger the better.”

The work will be taking place all day on Sunday and Monday, and any squishy squids will be welcome during and after the redesign. Alternatively, the centre would welcome any new interactive toys for the children, to help them learn and have fun at the same time. Any donations can be dropped off at Methold House, in North Street, Worthing.

The centre helps children like Darcy, who is 14 and has CFC Syndrome and severe epilepsy. This rare genetic condition has left her wheelchair-bound, requiring full time care.

Mum Natasha said: “Darcy started using services at the Ashdown Centre when she was five, nine years ago. It made a huge difference to us all. She enjoys being with people her own age, and she’s made so many friends.

“It’s been the one thing that’s been really consistent in Darcy’s life and it makes her so happy.”
