A WOMAN who is concerned for Worthing’s homeless population is urging councillors to support her idea for a night shelter in Worthing.

Laura Scott, 25, of Cotswold Road, was inspired by a presentation about the town’s homeless at a recent residents’ panel meeting in Durrington.

Noticing that neighbouring towns had night shelters in place, and that Worthing did not, she is now campaigning for Worthing Borough Council to support her idea.

She has also begun meeting the various organisations who help the homeless and is volunteering to try and learn more about the community.

She said: “I think there is a real need for a night shelter.

“A lot of the organisations I have spoken to, including the Salvation Army, have said there is a need for one and I think the council need to be supporting the idea.”

Laura believes the way forward is to adopt a similar system to Brighton, whereby a group of churches work together to provide night shelter services on different nights.

This way, the location is moved around, preventing one single area from becoming overloaded.
