Brexit reaction: Twinning associations say links are still strong

Links with the continent are still strong despite Brexit, two twinning associations have said.

“While we we are concerned at the effect of recent events our commitment remains as strong as ever,” said a statement from Burgess Hill Town Twinning Association.

“In 2014 the Mayor of Schmallenberg Burgermeister Bernard Halbe presented a gift to the Mayor of Burgess Hill to celebrate our successful and important 25 years together.

“In September we will be joined by the Mid Sussex Brass Band for our visit to Schmallenberg, re-affirming the value we place on the strong relationship between our towns,”

The association also has links with Abbeville in France.

Irene Balls. chairman of Haywards Heath Twinning Association, said: “Our relationship with our twin towns in France and Germany is strong and rock solid. It will continue to remain so.

“Plans involving the twin towns to develop educational, cultural and social links and exchanges are in place and our joint vision and endeavour is to increase these connections.

“Fundamental to children’s learning is the development of international links between schools.

“Our aim is to enable partnership working with the schools of Haywards Heath, Bondues, and Traunstein.

“Friendship is a precious gift which crosses borders.”
