Appeal over Tilgate street robberies

Police are appealing for information about four ‘upsetting’ street robberies in Tilgate, Crawley, over the last three weeks.

An 80-year-old woman had a carrier bag snatched containing personal items and cash as she walked down an alleyway, on February 18 at around 2.30pm.

She was walking towards Irving Walk when a white man aged between 18 and 22 ran past and grabbed the bag from the handle of her walking frame and ran off towards Tilgate Way and Southgate Avenue.

A 56-year-old man had his wallet stolen as he walked through the same alleyway three days later (February 21) at around 4.15pm.

It was snatched from his hand by a man described as black and wearing dark clothing.

A 57-year-old woman had her handbag snatched as she walked along Winterfold at 5pm on February 21.

She tried to keep hold of her bag but was pulled over when the strap broke and the man ran off.

He fled towards Forest View and into Gainsborough playing fields.

He was described as white, aged about 17, skinny and about 5’ 5” tall.

A 33-year-old woman had her handbag containing a purse and mobile phone snatched at 9.15pm on Saturday March 2.

She was walking on York Road when she felt someone push her from behind and grab her bag.

The suspect was described as white, around 6ft and wearing a grey hooded top and blue jeans.

Detective constable Andy Robinson said: “We are appealing for anyone with information about these incidents to come forward. Fortunately none of these victims have been hurt but have been left shaken up and extremely upset about what has happened. Anyone who witnessed what happened or saw someone acting suspiciously in the area around the time these robberies occurred, please contact police on 101. Alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
