£1,000 donated to school boy with muscular dystrophy

A FAMILY has thanked the people who have helped to make one little boy’s school life easier.
Kieron Strange has the neuromuscular condition Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Now eight, he has been in a wheelchair since the day before his sixth birthday.
His school, Seal Primary Academy, has installed hoists and other equipment to make his school life easier. Now, it is fundraising for a folding mobile hoist so Kieron can go on school trips without his mum, Teresa, having to lift him in and out of his wheelchair.
Fundraising received a boost just before Christmas when local company Highhouse Insurance, based in Selsey High Street, donated £1,000.
Kieron’s grandmother, Lynn Strange, thanked the company for its donation, presented by Neil Kimber.
“I would just like to say a really big thank you because it is really going to help him and improve his life a little bit,” she said.
She also thanked school staff for all their support and the Sussex Snowdrop Trust.
“They are absolutely brilliant, you can’t fault them at all,” she said.
Teresa said she ‘really appreciated’ the donation and support.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by the lack of a protein called dystrophin, leading to progressive muscle weakness and a reduced life expectancy. Around 100 boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are born in the UK every year.
Speaking about Kieron’s progression, Lynn said: “Up until he was four years old he was fine.
“Then he started falling over.”
Kieron’s younger brother and sister, Chloe and Daniel, are also now pupils at Seal.
“Daniel does a lot for him, he is like is little carer,” said Lynn.
“Kieron can’t even lift up a cup. It is heart-breaking to see.”
Seal headteacher Matt Batchelor said: “This very generous donation has resulted in the school being able to purchase a mobile hoist for Kieron which means he will be able to participate greater in school trips, and helps reinforce the inclusive ethos of the school.”
