Concern over mud ‘eyesore’ and road damage from works lorries

A woman is calling for mud to be cleared off Tilgate’s streets after claiming work at Tilgate Forest Golf Club is turning Tilgate Park and surrounding areas into an ‘eyesore’.

Karen Lewis, from West Green, said Titmus Drive, Ashdown Drive and Weald Drive were covered in mud which has been sprayed on to the pavements. Construction company PJ Brown is currently carrying out the works.

Karen said: “The amount of road mess and damage to asphalt has been ludicrous. Thousands has been spent on renovating Tilgate Parade yet somehow the whole area is a complete and utter mess. The park and the roads leading up to it are paramount for bringing outside visitors and revenue to our lovely park and little by little these lorries are ruining it and making the whole area an eyesore.”

Cllr Nigel Boxall (Con, Tilgate) had received a number of complaints. He said: “I am very concerned about the damage being done to our roads. I have had Crawley Borough Council’s enforcement officers visit the site to discuss the problems with Glendale [owner of the golf club] and PJ Brown and will be contacting them again as I don’t think the situation has improved.”

A spokesman for PJ Brown said: “The only route to and from the driving range is via Titmus Drive and we have a wheel cleaning facility on site and a full-time road sweeper which cleans the surrounding streets.

“We are doing all we can to minimise disruption to residents and we are making our best endeavours to improve the condition of the road.

“Any wear and tear to the highway has been mended within a matter of days and a large number of pot holes, which existed long before the project even began, have been repaired free of charge as a goodwill gesture.”
