Amy Simmons organised the fundraising event at St Andrew’s Church hall, Holmes Lane, on Saturday, September 17, with help from Kelly Johnston and Gemma Bryant.

Amy said: “I have held fundraising events before but not to this scale. My last big event was for the British Heart Foundation in 2014 and it raised £870.”

There were games, like name the teddy and guess the number of sweets in a jar, lucky squares offering the chance to win a holiday in the New Forest and a key challenge, manned by Glyn-Jones estate agent.

Hand-made items by the late Audrey Hatch, who recently died at the Worthing hospice, were on sale.

Amy added: “We had a performance in the morning by the Georgian Gardens School Samba Band and Choir, and the Sussex Tornadoes Cheerleaders came in the afternoon.

“Guile Reptiles were also set up with their wonderful animals for people to hold, or just admire through the tank. Guile Reptiles attended the event for free.

“Lots and lots of prizes were donated by the local community, so thank you to everyone.

“The hall was a hive of activity in the morning, you could barely move for people. It quietened down over the lunch period but we had a steady flow of visitors all day.”

Raffle prizes included a stay at Bailiffscourt Hotel and Spa.
