ONCE again the West Chiltington Branch of the Children’s Society undertook to sell Alexandra Roses during June, with street collections on Saturday 18th June in Storrington Shopping Precinct and outside Cherilyn in West Chiltington in the morning and in West Street, Horsham, on that rainy afternoon. In round figures these amassed £180, £146 and £22 respectively.
House-to-house collections from four roads in West Chiltington during the week added a further £167. People these days are generous and most provide us at least a pound coin (we had 265 of these) or equivalent in change; but being given a note always makes a collector’s day.
To encourage more of the latter, and because the Children’s Society is a charity I support personally, I as organizer undertook to match each and every note donated, and this raised the total to £600, our best since I took over as organizer from my late mother in 1998.
Alexandra Rose Charities support our collections by supplying the roses and getting permission from the Council, for just 10% of what we collect.
