Clean bill of health for Petworth doctors

Petworth Doctors’ Surgery has been given a clean bill of health after a Care Quality Commission inspection.

The surgery was given a ‘good’ overall rating and ‘good’ in all five categories examined headed safety, effective, responsive, well led and caring.

In his summary of findings Professor Steve Field, chief inspector of general practice said the inspection carried out at the end of January, was to confirm the surgery had carried out its plan to meet requirements after breaches in regulations were identified in a CQC inspection last June.

“The inspection determined the provider was now meeting all requirements,” said Prof Field.

He said significant events were fully recorded centrally and discussed at regular meetings.

The practice was monitoring and tracking blank prescription forms including when prescriptions were delivered to the practice.

During the visit the practice was reconfiguring the layout of the dispensary and reception area. “We saw this would allow for greater security and improve confidentially. Controlled drugs were stored in a locked cabinet in a second locked cabinet. Keys to both these cabinets were stored within a key safe which could only be accessed by authorised staff.”

He said the surgery had a new infection control lead and inspectors saw evidence of training and the attendance of various forums for infection control.

The practice had also employed a new cleaning company and there were daily cleaning plans. All staff had received training on infection control which included hand washing.

In additional the new practice manager, who joined in November, was reviewing all policies and procedures and ensuring they were up to date and relevant.

“The practice manager informed us there were plans in place for a weekly huddle meeting with key staff members to ensure important information was disseminated,” said Prof Field. “This ensured all staff were kept up to date with changes and had a forum to raise questions or concerns.”
