Crawley-based OnO Theatre Company has been granted £10,000 from West Sussex County Council Members’ Big Society Fund to produce plays and workshops for schools.
The company puts on performances in schools and theatres across Sussex and the South East which tackle issues such as teenage drinking, teenage risk taking, and improving literacy.
It consists of young performers who volunteer their time for a year while they prepare for higher education.
Young people at risk, or in need, are recommended through the Crawley Job Centre and often join the theatre group.
The plays and workshops are popular and in demand, with a tour of primary schools planned during 2012/13.
The funding will be spent on theatre production, touring and training the young volunteers.
County Council Cabinet Member for Finances and Resources, Michael Brown, said: “This is a fantastic youth theatre project which inspires both the children who witness the performances and the young people who star in them.
“Its work is endorsed by Sussex Police, Fire and Rescue and our schools and we want it to continue.”
