A man is being questioned by police after failing to stop for officers in Staplefield on Monday night (23 September).

There was a car chase through Cuckfield and Haywards Heath, ending in Ashenground Wood near Bolnore Village.

According to Sussex police: “A Vauxhall Astra was seen, believed to be travelling at speed, on Cuckfield Road at 10.20pm and when officers tried to stop the car, it drove off at speed.

“The vehicle drove through Cuckfield and Haywards Heath around the one-way system the wrong way and then down a footpath into Ashenground Woods where it came to a stop.”

A chained, oak gate at the entrance to the woods at the bottom of Ashenground Road was damaged during the incident (see photograph).

In a statement, Sussex police say: “A 28-year-old man from Crawley was arrested for agrravated vehicle taking, criminal damage, theft, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, careless or dangerous driving.”

He remains in custody this morning (24 September).
