Families lined the streets to enjoy a procession of floats and entertainment while Captain Jack Sparrow even made an appearance to thrill the crowds.

One of the organisers, Kathy Newman, said: “This year’s event was a great success – our theme was smugglers and pirates and this was really well represented by the float entries.”

High Street shops all joined in the fun of the day with activities such as a pirate trail, apple-bobbing and a pirate photoshoot.

Lots of the shops decorated their windows following the pirate theme and The Shop won the shop window competition, with Country Gardens runner-up.

For the first time the annual Selsey Carnival had joined forces with the Selsey Business Partnership to put on the all-day event, held on Sunday throughout the town.

Kathy said: “This year we had a number of new events including two pirate shows courtesy of Groundling Theatre from Portsmouth, which was really enjoyed by children and adults alike.

“And we were very lucky to have Captain Jack Sparrow spending time swashbuckling his way around the High Street and judging the float entries.”

Selsey firefighters again joined in the parade along with Selsey Coastguard and many others in a well-attended procession which was marshalled by the Selsey Lions.

The weather held out and another brilliant carnival came to an end with a spectacular firework display on the recreation ground.

The Selsey Business Partnership said that a lot of work had gone into the day and wished to thank everyone who helped in every way.
