Maximum enjoyment at home with added sparkle on Hayling Island

Sometimes, when choosing a home, it's easy to make a spur of the moment decision rather than giving thought to the future.

But the owners of Shorecroft, a Hayling seafront property, sat down with their architect and thought things through probably more thoroughly than most.

For this reason, what many would regard as a dream home also has its practical touches, such as the easy creation of a ground floor annexe utilising the fifth bedrooms, study, shower room, and utility to provide a self-contained home within a home.

But, as Anne-Marie Green, of Fine and Country in Emsworth explains, the real intention of the design was to maximise enjoyment of the seafront location and ensure that the views, sunsets, and fresh air could be absorbed as often as possible.

So they took as their guiding principle three key elements; modern family life, the wonderful setting, and the ever-changing seasonal light.

The inspirational results are now there for all to see – to a degree.

In addition to a ground floor drawing room behind a large bay window, there is a first floor sitting room with double French doors onto a balcony. There are similar doors in the master bedroom but purdah glass ensures that while there’s always a view out no-one gets an uninvited view in.

“When you first see the house, you marvel at how much thought has gone into it,” said Anne-Marie. “It’s difficult to think of any major improvement that could be made. True, subsequent owners might want to tinker with detail or decor, as is the case with any home, but the planning has been so thorough that nothing has been left to chance.

“At the rear of the house, for instance, the dining/family room adjoins the kitchen and two sets of bi-fold doors bring the garden into the living space. Twin roof lanterns floors the interior with natural light, picked up by the ‘blue eyes’ granite worktops with flecks that pick up the light.

“This living space has underfloor heating so even in cooler weather it’s an attractive place to be. The kitchen is also well equipped with appliances, easing the workload even for the most enthusiastic of cooks.

“The practical side of the house is emphasised by a further ground floor bedroom, although it could easily have an alternative use, and three bedrooms upstairs, with the master sharing the outstanding views across the Seafront and The Solent to the Isle of Wight.

“All upstairs bedrooms are accessed from the open-plan sitting room and are served by a family bathroom – the master has its own shower and dressing rooms.

“The sunsets can be spectacular and it’s easy to imagine a sundowner on a warm evening before turning in.

“The house is very much about relaxed living. The front garden is more reminiscent of a pebble beach, doubling as practical parking in front of the integral double garage, while the rear garden has a variety of trees, borders, lawn, plus a summer house on a raised deck that captures the evening sun.”
