A ‘REAL life hero’ has been thanked at a special reception hosted by Worthing mayor Michael Donin.

Jamie Walton, 22, from Lancing, received an award for his quick thinking and act of kindness, helping a woman who had a fall.

Mr Donin presented Jamie with a Certificate of Commendation at Worthing Town Hall on Monday.

They were joined by Paul and Marjorie Fells, of Freshbrook Road, Lancing, who had written to the council at the end of last year about Jamie’s efforts.

Marjorie said she was walking dogs in Pond Lane Recreation Ground on November 24 when she fell. Jamie acted quickly by calling Marjorie’s husband and paramedics to the scene.

“I walk other people’s dogs and I had just got back to the van,” Marjorie explained.

“I slipped over and didn’t think anything of it at the time. I got up but found I could not stand. I managed to get the dogs back into the van by hopping and then I was hanging on to the side of the van.

“Jamie had emptied the bin at the bottom of the park and saw me. I was concerned for the dogs but he offered to wait until someone came. He even held up the drip bag when the paramedic came.

“He was well beyond his years in the way he handled it. It was lovely to see him again and we found out he has now passed his HGV test so he is now out driving the big dust carts.”

It turned out Marjorie had broken her hip twice and she has since had a complete hip replacement.

Mr Donin told Jamie: “You are a real life hero, and Adur and Worthing councils are very proud to have you as a member of the team and community.”

Jamie is one of three generations of his family to work for the council. He is one of the youngest drivers for the Adur and Worthing Council Services (AWCS) team.

A spokesman for the team said: “We are all very proud of Jamie. This is the latest example of our staff going above and beyond the call of duty while out on the rounds each day.”
