a  unique beach hut has been given to a charity providing help to families with disabled children and young adults across West Sussex .

Smile Support and Care, which has offices based in Littlehampton, received the beach hut located on Hayling Island.

The Solent facing hut comes fully furnished ready to be enjoyed and is easily accessible for people with disabilities, making it ideal for the young people of Smile Support & Care.

The beach hut was officially accepted by the charity with a grand opening by the Mayor of Havant, Gerald Shimbart, in front of a crowd of the charity’s staff members and the children they support.

The donation was made by Ted Gostling, President Emeritus of the ACT Foundation, a grant making charity enhancing the quality of life for children in need.

Ted acquired the beach hut in 2005 for his family and friends to enjoy trips to the beach. In recent years Ted and his family have been unable to use the hut as regularly and as such have donated it for others to enjoy.

Ted said: “The support Smile Support & Care provide to disabled children and young adults is admirable and it is my pleasure to donate the beach hut we have on Hayling Island beach.

“The location is beautiful and makes a great day out by the sea. I hope the beach hut provides many happy memories for those supported by the charity.”

Stuart Baldwin, chief executive of Smile Support & Care said: “We are extremely grateful to Ted who has provided us with such a unique and special donation. The beach hut is in a lovely place and will be a very welcome destination for many of our young people to enjoy.”

Ahead of the beach hut launch a team from the local ASDA superstore lent a hand to help uphold the pristine appearance of the hut with a touch of paint and weeding.

The ASDA volunteers plan to return in the spring to give the hut a blue and yellow themed makeover to compliment the Smile Support & Care charity colours.

Smile Support & Care charity officially launched its 18th Anniversary Appeal last year to raise £3.4 million to build a much needed short-break centre near Waterlooville, Portsmouth to offer essential breaks to the people they support.
