Parents urged to know their children's whereabouts in the Horsham district
WITH the summer holidays finally here, parents in the Horsham District are being urged to know where their children are and what they're doing when they go out.
The lighter evenings typically bring a rise in the number incidents of anti-social behaviour across the District, but issues are particularly noticeable in Horsham town and some of the larger villages.
Andrew Baldwin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Development at Horsham District Council, said: "Most parents act responsibly and know where their children are and what they are doing.
"Unfortunately some don't know and these are the children who could be engaged in anti social behaviour, vandalism, underage drinking and the like.
"I am not a killjoy, but coming home from London on 28 July about 15 Horsham teenagers, some a lot younger than 16, joined the 23.06 train at Crawley and most appeared worse for wear.
"All parents need to take responsibility for their children and make sure that are not up to any harm or anti-social behaviour especially now the nights are light until 9.30pm."
Under age drinking is a particular problem and often a contributory factor to anti-social behaviour with young people who are under the influence being more likely to become aggressive and put themselves in risky situations.
The Horsham District Community Safety Partnership is therefore urging parents to help keep their children safe by making sure they know where they are when they go out, what they are doing and who they are with.
Greg Charman, Community Safety Manager for the Horsham District Community Safety Partnership, added: "We are aware of the need to provide young people with things to do over the summer holidays that are safe and enjoyable and are working closely with West Sussex Youth Service to provide a programme of different activities."
To find out more about the activities that are being provided over the summer visit the West Sussex Youth Service website: horshamyouth.org.uk or for a Summer Holiday Activity Pack and information call Horsham District Council on 01403 215623.
To report incidents of anti-social behaviour call Sussex Police (non emergency number) on 0845 60 70 999. Call 999 in an emergency.
