THE Worthing Arts and Music Festival started with a bang on Thursday as dancers took to the Pavilion Theatre stage.

The annual festival, which began more 60 years ago, is running throughout February and includes dance, piano, singing, speech and drama performances.

Jan Spooner-Swabey, festival secretary, said: “It’s been a very busy weekend, all the groups have been spectacular. There has been some really lovely, promising work.

“One of the highlights so far has been the under-nines performances. It was like a play group on stage, all small children having a marvellous time with a lot of props.

“It has been really nice to see some boys dancing. There was an all boys dance group who were absolutely fantastic.”

Jane added that there had been a ‘buzz’ about the festival so far.

“When you are down there you can really feel the enjoyment the audience is having,” she said.

“There are a lot of really talented people in our area. When the judges come down they always comment that our dancers are of a particularly high standard.”

The dance section of the festival concluded yesterday. Piano finals are taking place on Saturday and the singing section of the festival begins next Friday.

A Les Miserables workshop hosted by Kim Ismay, an actress currently starring in the London Novello Theatre as Tanya from Mamma Mia! is taking place on the last day of the festival (March 1).

The actress will be guiding six students through songs of their choice as part of the penultimate performance before the speech and drama finals.
