A BURGESS Hill woman is turning the painful loss of her former partner at the age of only 45 into something positive to help hospice patients.

John Haskell Jnr from Burgess Hill was known as a 'passionate fisherman', especially when going in search of carp.

Family and friends of John were devastated when he died in May from cancer, and he was cared for in the last days of his life by the St Peters and St James Hospice at Wivelsfield Green.

Alayne Wells has already passed her expected £500 sponsorship from taking part in the recent Hike4Hospices walk along the South Downs from Lewes to Chichester.

Alayne said: "I was walking in memory of John, who tragically died three months ago from cancer at just 45 years old. He was a passionate carp fisherman, a much loved individual having lived all his life in Burgess Hill.

"His family are all local.

"John, my former partner, was looked after by St Peter and St James hospice and they deserve all the support they can get which is why I chose to walk a leg of the 77 miles and have raised more than £500. Local businesses supported me also."

John, the father of Kaya, and the son of John and Valerie Haskell, died on May 21. He also left three brothers; Tim, Mick, and Mark.

If anyone else wants to support Alayne's leg-weary efforts her fundraising page can be found on www.justgiving.com/alaynewells.
