Have your say

We’re back to post-war Horsham again and this week we have a trio of sporty pictures for you to ponder.

They were all published in the County Times in 1947 and show the town’s young swimmers, footballers and a tug-of-war team.

The swimmers were taking part in a gala organised by the Horsham Amateur Swimming Club at Horsham Swimming Pool.

There were no names with the photo, so can anyone help? Also, does anyone know why the lad sitting front left was the only one not wearing his swimming kit?

Next up are the men of Horsham FC, who had just secured a 4-0 victory over Newhaven.

The win saw them crowned champions of the Sussex County Football League for the seventh time.

Pictured standing, from left, were: J Dashwood, DG Daubney, R Lindfield, V Robins, RE Spriggs, J Burdfield.

Front, from left, were: CE Hemsley, J Ripley (captain), O Parker, N Roberts and R Smallwood.

Are any of these old players still around?

Finally, a gaggle of Horsham’s police officers took time of from walking the beat and put their backs into a muscle-straining bout of tug-of-war.

They were competing in the West Sussex Police Sports contest, in Midhurst, and were being urged on by Supt WH Wright.

They lost.
