Arundel’s Southdowns Concert Band has raised more than £800 at recent charity concerts, with the cash going to the Nick Webber Memorial Trust and The Snowdrop Trust.

Andy Davidson, band spokesman, said: “The two concerts were filled with musical excellence, with the Southdowns Concert Band under the musical direction of Tom Hodge.

“Tom, currently serving as a bandmaster in the Royal Marines Band Service, has a vision for the Southdowns Band: to develop and improve musical excellence within the ensemble, performing to the highest standard at concert venues throughout the southern area.

“Primarily and most importantly, the music-making must be an enjoyable experience for all, creating a constructive and cheerful environment.

“Southdowns musicians come from all over the county and many of the players are involved in music professionally, as school teachers or as instrument tutors. Others play for local community or town bands, but enjoy the challenge of performing to a higher level.”

Forthcoming concert dates include: Wednesday, June 29 - St Paul’s Church, Chichester; Sunday, July 10, 8pm - Eastbourne Bandstand Prom Concert; Saturday, July 16 - Singleton Fete; Sunday, 17 July, 2 to 4pm - Prom Concert, Jubilee Gardens, Arundel; Saturday, July 23 - Pagham Fete. Andy added: “The Southdowns Concert Band is a long-established group of around 40 musicians who play regular concerts all over Sussex, rehearsing in Arundel. Our high standard of performance demands players with grade 6 minimum standard. Vacancies are posted on our website www.southdowns-concertband.co.uk.”
