ANYONE caught littering in the Horsham District this summer could receive a fixed penalty notice of £75.
Horsham District Council spends thousands of pounds clearing up litter from roads, footpaths and public open spaces.
This is money which could be better spent elsewhere and it is hoped that a crackdown to stop the drop will raise the profile of this waste.
Roger Arthur (Con, Chanctonbury), cabinet member for operational services, said: "Leaving or dropping litter is unfair on everyone and it is offensive.
"Rats feed on fast food litter and therefore the more that is dropped, the more they breed and the closer they get.
"Litter is unsightly and can be particularly dangerous to children and animals."
Over the summer, targeted patrols will be taking place across the Horsham District in hotspot areas.
Fly tipping is also illegal and any incidents should be reported to the council on 01403 733144 or the Environment Agency 24 hour hotline on 0800 807 060. An online reporting form can also be used at www.horsham.gov.uk
Any incidents of littering should be reported to the council's Street Scene Wardens on 01403 215533.
